Northern Universities Student Club Community Cricketers Elite today unveiled it would host the ‘Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Tri Nation Championship’ from June 22-26 at Ashbrooke Sports Club, Sunderland.

Six matches will be spread over five tough days of competition with a three way battle for national pride and cricketing reputation with the students representing “England”, hot favourites “Scotland” represented by their national academy and ICC Associate Champions “Ireland” by Leinster Cricket Union, the countries premier cricketing province.

All teams will be treated to a 5 star week by Ashbrooke Sports Club and this year the touring teams have the added bonus of staying in the luxury surroundings of the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead after their General Manager Guy Hilton announced an open invitation for the teams to use the hotel as their base.

Scotland lead by current International Craig Wright start as hot favourites having turned their academy into a semi professional set up. Their players have prepared for the tournament by spending three months in Australia and now compete on a weekly basis in the Scotland Premier League cricket league already producing some significant league wins.

Leinster headed up by former Ireland U19 manager Brían O’Rourke pack some formidable names of the future with Kevin O’Brien one of the current Ireland Internationals and recently signed to Notts CCC one of their tours most notable graduates. They always look to add in cultural activities to their tours so have trips to the Stadium of Light, St James Park, Angel of the North and Durham CCC ground already booked in. However, most notable has been their offer to host a masterclass for all the cricketing juniors in the Ashbrooke area to join with hosts NUSC aim of developing cricket in the city.

John D Holland, NUSC Director of Cricket added “we are again honoured to be hosting these fine sides in the North East and for the first time at the “Lords of the North” in Ashbrooke. No doubt we start as underdogs against a semi professional national academy from Scotland and a highly tuned Ireland squad featuring all the forthcoming stars of their national team. However, upsets can happen in sport and we are focused on securing a scalp to show Europe the cricketing talent in the North East of England. We would welcome any and all support the North East can give us in our forthcoming challenges”
