The weather was the final winner at Sydney Parade ruining what promised to be an interesting match. Batting first, the Pembroke innings was built around a steady 49 from Andy Balbirnie. On a slow track, he was happy to play the anchor role allowing Rick Francis to score more freely. After Francis had hit Stephen Neill for a big straight six, he played all around the following ball to be bowled for 34.
Theo Lawson then joined in and they had taken the score to 134 in the 36th over when Balbirnie played across Paddy Conliffe's stock straight ball leaving his leg in front of middle stump with the inevitable result. Graham McDonnell made a quick fire 27 and the score had reached 207 for 5 with 17 deliveries left when the encircling gloom and rolls of thunder brought proceedings to a premature conclusion with Lawson left on 45*.
Dave Langford Smith (1 for 15) and Garth Ancher (1 for 28) were the best of the Phoenix bowlers who all contributed far too many extras to what would have been a challenging total.
